Housing for older and disabled people

From "Type, size or tenure of new homes"

Go to the project

The SLP will need to ensure that the needs for housing for older and disabled people are addressed. National planning guidance sets out advice on the different types of specialist housing designed to meet the diverse needs of older people, which can include:

·      Age-restricted market housing.

·      Retirement living or sheltered housing.

·      Extra care housing or housing-with-care.

·      Residential care homes and nursing homes.

Other models of housing include co-housing, which are created and run by residents, allowing people to live with others with similar needs and desires.

The SLP will similarly need to consider the need for accessible and adaptable housing to enable disabled people to live more independently and safely, with greater choice and control over their lives.

How can we ensure the SLP plans for the needs of older and disabled people?

I'm glad to see this need has been identified. There should be varied options for retired people and those who are wishing to downsize, to move forward into the next phase of their lives. Choice is often limited to bungalows and communal living, it would be good to see more imaginative accessible single-storey buildings with gardens.
