Scenario 6 Sustainable Transport

From "Vote for your preferred scenarios"

Go to the project

This option means delivering development in locations along existing and potential high frequency public transport, walking and cycling routes. It draws on the broad objectives of Gloucestershire County Council as the body responsible for managing road and public transport networks. The Local Transport Plan in particular, promotes sustainable travel. Development under this scenario would need to be integrated in, or linked to, the Gloucestershire cycle spine and the proposed Gloucestershire Mass Rapid Transport system, which is a longer-term aspiration. Furthermore, all the local authorities in Gloucestershire have agreed a Statement of Shared Intent to in principle to reduce carbon emissions from transport in line with science-based targets to achieve net zero ambitions by 2050.

This option includes Whaddon which is not a proven sustainable option. The Active Travel England submission to Stroud DC on the Taylor Wimpey Whaddon planning application is critical on the scope for Whaddon to be sustainable. Stroud Road will not support safe cycling nor will Naas lane.

Sustainable Transport option links areas of good transport networks, promoting more sustainable travel, and reducing carbon emissions from transport. In my option, this is suited more to Urban areas where the transport networks are already there - NOT areas like Highnam which would only put more traffic on the roads.

Sustainable transport reduces air pollution, promotes better health and enables people to be more connected. A mass transit system from Gloucester, through Cheltenham to Tewkesbury would reduce car usage and could promote cyclability along the route.
Gloucestershire Young Planners are supportive of the Sustainable Transport proposal. Enhancing transport options, particularly eco-friendly ones like cycle paths, is crucial in today's urban planning. Integrating housing development with such transport infrastructure can significantly contribute to reducing carbon emissions and improving the quality of life for residents. Areas like the land between Cheltenham and Bishop Cleeve, alongside new cycle paths, are prime examples of where housing development can be located with sustainable transport initiatives. In order to effectively implement this strategy, it is imperative to review the green belt boundaries. This adjustment is essential to make room for these new developments, aligning with our sustainability and transport objectives. Furthermore, collaboration with key stakeholders, including the county council, is paramount. Their involvement and support will be crucial in delivering these schemes.
