Where’s the detailed vision of how we’ll be living our lives in the 2040s?

From "Draft Vision"

Go to the project

Now is the time to think and plan ahead and stop incremental short term planning where housing is built seemingly ad hoc to meet demand (although supply and demand aren’t always matched to create the type of housing people need in the places they want to live) with a failure to invest in the necessary infrastructure causing tension and frustration as traffic jams just get worse, people can’t access doctors or dentists and there is a fight for places at nearby schools.

What will life be like in the 2030s and 40s? What will family life look like? What will AI do to the job market? Will many people continue to work from home? How will social needs be met by providing opportunities to build communities?

If we start with a vision of how people in the coming years will be able to enjoy fulfilling lives then we can start to fill in the detail of how we can achieve this by building first the right infrastructure then the right kind of facilities and houses in the right places.

There is a significant risk (?) / chance that the number of people Working From Home will return to pre-pandemic levels. Humans are essentially social, and achieve their best when in the company of colleagues. This is especially true for young or inexperienced members of a team. Providing shared work space away from colleagues and the home seems doesn’t seem ideal.

Supportive of Anne’s views. I appreciate not everyone works in an office but hybrid working should be looked at. For example, loneliness can be an issue for people working from home. Maybe create spaces in communities, eg apartment blocks, from where individuals can work together.
