Public Transport First

Ynte Lammertsma•2 years ago Self-contained developments are a good idea in theory but I'm struggling to think of any new developments recently that provided new stores, employment opportunities and education at a scale that made sense. Mostly they are isolated islands of new single family homes.Councils need to be focused on ensuring that public transport to new developments is reliable and sustainable. In the short term this means dedicated bus and cycle lanes and signal priority to buses at intersections.Later on, bus lanes can be converted to tram tracks as density increases.Rail rights of way should also be identified and protected for the long term by council, with station sites reserved. We will eventually need to connect our communities by heavy rail to tackle the climate crisis - reserving the space from the outset (or protecting old former railway rights of way) is the key to planning for the future. We must, as a matter of priority, put pedestrians, cyclists and public transport users first over private cars.
