Dan Etchells2 years ago Seems very likely - as indicated by the voting exercise - that a blend of scenarios will be adopted.So, my additional scenario is simply an acceptance that we cannot follow one path, we need to follow a blended approach.#For me - as I voted - that is probably a focus on Urban Extension, New Strategic Settlement and Sustainable Transport, with a small element of Urban Concentration.Presumably there is uncertainty around budgets etc. so this kind of approach ought to provide some flexibility??

simon bee2 years ago The scenarios put forward and voting suggests an 'either or' situation. What should be stressed is that intelligent options can be used in tandem. For instance, urban regen combined with limited urban extension plus reconnected sustainable transport corridors. Repairing unsightly brownfield land is key to repairing and making our towns fairer places. For developers, tearing up the green belt is the easy option - open clean sites where the same dull residential housing typologies proliferate and ruin the identity of rural settlements and cherished landscapes. Scale is everything - some of the sites described as 'potentially developable' are hugely out of scale with the rural settlements they neighbour. (Take Southam, for example, where the suggested sites indicate a potential doubling in size of the village!!) Developers should actually be encouraged and compelled to think far more imaginatively and deploy a much broader range of contextural, sustainable and higher density typologies on cleaned up brownfield sites and urban extensions (as is encouraged widely by our European neighbours), and actively prevented from damaging the green belt by filling the gaps between historic settlements with nondescript and inappropriate 'estates'. We deserve cleverer thinking from those who would seek to profit from development.

Stephen Willetts2 years ago This is obviously bringing together the options 3 and 6. Experience to date with the Stroud District Local Plan examination which is currently paused given the mess it is in with regard to strategic road infrastructure and new settlements suggests that any plan that relies on wishful thinking hundreds of millions to sort out motorway junctions etc is likely to fail. The challenge I wish to make is to not take what can often be seen as the easy option of new strategic settlements and work to improve the current urban settings, extend those sympathetically and use and build along the strategic transport infrastructure that already exists and that can be improved for more modest sums. Can planners meet this challenge?
