One of the roles of the SLP will be to establish the right level of employment growth and ensure that the right type of employment land is provided in the right sorts of locations for business wishing to invest, expand and adapt.

We would like to hear your ideas to the the questions below.

What economic and regeneration needs should the SLP address in supporting businesses to invest, expand and adapt?

How should the SLP best seek to accommodate employment needs and provide an environment that is attractive to inward investment?

How should the SLP support and encourage rural employment?

James Nicholson-Smith2 years ago The planning system needs to attract more innovative approaches to agriculture. In particular the use of hydroponics, solar powered systems, biofuel, and different greenhouse based businesses need to be encouraged to take up underused agricultural land near settlements rather than allow this land to be used for millionaire mansions and second/holiday homes. We need to focus on a local agricultural based ecosystem where produce is grown, turned into food that we eat and delivered to our tables as locally as possible whether through grocery stores, local produce baskets, farm shops, pop up restaurants and "local produce restaurants". NB Sixth Carbon Budget suggests that we need to reduce our meat/dairy consumption by 30%. therefore more innovative plant based food solutions are required to "pull" residents to achieve this. We need our rural economy to do this.In fact millionaire/second/holiday homes need to be downgraded to the lowest priority of accommodation in the planning priority hierarchy.

James Nicholson-Smith2 years ago Unfortunately the whole planning process is too focused on building lots of homes when the whole forecast need is almost certainly heavily overstated. Planning Policy needs to address a much bigger question over the next 20 years - what will our town centres need to be like to meet the needs of 2040 living. This needs to take account of increased automation and therefore much higher levels of productivity meaning more leisure time. However working less of the week will almost certainly mean lower earnings. Therefore more working people unable to afford to buy or rent in Cheltenham.Bricks and mortar retail is on its knees saddled with wrong space that is too exensive (rent and business rates). Losing Cavendish House is a real shame and just turning it into housing - will not be the answer. Hospitality might be the answer but not if that is unaffordable for the next generation.Entertainment might also be the answer but that will have to be a circular economy if its going to be sustainable ie locally employed people entertaining those with leaisure time to fill. What residents want is a proper vision on this major question and then policies that will deliver that vision. The developers will definitely NOT have a long term vision and banks will only fund dead certain plans.

NIGEL HAYWARD2 years ago Gloucester & Cheltenham should look at their own plans and divorce themselves from this SLP planning review. Tewkesbury has no rights to swallow up outlying land so that it can use it as a development buffer to protect itself. Gloucester has no real jobs so many people here commute long distances. Why build more houses for rich people from London to make matters worse? The infrastructure is creaking now. The key is to build small houses around major employers this reduces commute times and allows for shared public transport. Where has new industry set up in Gloucester for example? Very few large companies have, what is here already existed. It is perhaps under a new name, maybe a few smaller businesses have appeared but its not significant. I think we need an SLP review of the Local Government, Councillors and Boundary Commission wallers, looks to me ripe for weeding out the dead wood and saving some money. Not one person owns up to producing this SLP and its associated documents, no one has approved it from Tewks Borough Council (TBC) or the City or County Councils. Its just like dealing with a lot of Dino's set in their arcane ways, never to change, never to think about saving money, just spend the budget as quick as you can, or you wont get the same next year. the most annoying part is that this has been produced by TBC probably at great expense and its a bunch of C**p to be honest. TBC if you want to build houses do it in your neck of the woods, Ashchurch MOD looks a good bet now get out of Elmbridge and Barnwood and Longlevens

Cllr karan kaci Khazeni-Rad 2 years ago More houses should only be considered after looking at the road infrastructure as churchdown is gridlocked as more houses being build on the exit roads and only being looked at for the site and not the inpact it has on the village as a whole.6 schools with students being bussed in and parents dropping off the students brings some many more cars to the area, we only have 1 Dr surgery and 1 Dentist we need to consider transportation before more housing for 1000 homes that will bring a further 2000 cars or more.We sadly lost our train station years back but would now be useful again to get to Cheltenham and Gloucester Town centres, and just adding a cycle path is just no enough for the people of churchdown, they need exit routes as there aren't many jobs with in churchdown to sustain a workforce, so therefore they must travel out for work, the enviroment of cars sitting in gridlock serves no one....highways must consider more roads before more house to be allowed 😢 our community our village and our resident deserve a better solution to this issue.

Dan Etchells2 years ago The Draft Vision says - "Investment in training, skills and development will have attracted and retained a younger workforce and provided new premises and flexible workspaces to support a flourishing circular economy in both urban and rural areas. Inward investment, innovation and growth in key sectors including, amongst others, cyber and digital-tech, food/agri-tech, advanced engineering and tourism will have been fostered."I commented that we need a younger workforce while retaining and reskilling those already here.So - what needs to happen.We need a strategy - what do we want. Do we specialise?? Do we diversify??How do we move towards that. Does the Cyber Park in Cheltenham play a role?? Is it recognised?? Do we know the plans of big employers in our area?? Are we attractive to them??
